Cardiology


The Department of Cardiology, Govt. Kilpauk Medical College caters to the metropolitan city of Chennai and nearby districts. The services rendered by the department include outpatient care, inpatient care, interventional treatments including coronary and non-coronary interventions and special clinics like pacemaker clinics. Cardiology OP is conducted on all days except Sunday with 400-500 patients attending every OP days. Full fledged Cardiology CCU and Cath ICU with 7 beds has all facilities. Separate male and female wards are there for treating inpatients. The interventional procedures including coronary angiogram, primary and elective angioplasties, peripheral angioplasties, pericardiocentesis, temporary and permanent pacemaker implantationand device closure of post MI VSR are done in the department.

With four DM cardiology seats per year, the academic activity of the department is also excellent with daily discussion from 12-1 PM except on Sundays. Topic presentations by DM trainees include Seminars, Journal clubs, Clinical case presentations.

OUT-PATIENT SERVICES
  • 1. Special clinics including Heart Failure clinic, Arrhythmia clinic, Valvular heart disease &anti-coagulation clinic, pacemaker clinic.
  • 2. Cardiac screening for ante-natal patients on all days.
  • 3. 12 lead ECG – 2 machines for male and female patients
  • 4. 2 D Echocardiography – 3 machines for male, female and pediatric patients; on all week days.
  • 5. TMT for borderline risk patients; on all week days

IN-PATIENT SERVICES
Intensive coronary care unit (ICCU):
  • 1. Equipped with 10 bedded ICCU with oxygen supply, infusion pump, defibrillator, ventilators and cardiac monitors with trained staff nurses.
  • 2. Two ECG machines one ECHO machine for emergency bedside echos and for follow up.
  • 3. Temporary pacemaker kits and pericardiocentesis kits in the ICCU.

Cardiology Wards:
  • 1. 25 bedded fully equipped male and female wards, to treat patients who have recovered from the acute phase and manage clinically stable patients.
  • 2. ECG machine, monitors, oxygen supply, infusion pump, defibrillator are available for wards.

Echocardiography:

Separate dedicated echocardiography machines are available in Cardiology OPD, ICCU, IMCU, TAEI ward, Labour ward ICU, Burns ICU, Post-anaesthetic ICU, paediatric ICU and neonatal ICU.

Holter Monitoring:

Holter Monitoring is done for needy patients on all days.

Cath Lab:
  • 1. Cath lab is functioning on all days including Sunday and Govt Holidays.
  • 2. Diagnostic angiographies, primary and elective angioplasties, pharmacoinvasive procedures are done routinely.
  • 3. Temporary and permanent pacemaker implantation procedures are done regularly.
  • 4. Device closure including that for Post-MI VSR are also done in the department.
  • 5. Diagnostic procedures like FFR, IVUS, Right Heart Catheterization are also being done for needed patients.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
  • 1. 4 D.M seats per year.
  • 2. Regular classes for post-graduates on all working days from 12-1.00 pm.
  • 3. Seminars, Clinical case presentations, Journal clubs are posted regularly for D.M trainees.
  • 4. Medicine PGs are being posted for specialty posting in Cardiology on rotation basis and they also actively take part in academic activities of the department.
  • 5. CMEs are being conducted regularly for the benefit of the post graduates.
  • 6. Post-graduates also take part in various conferences, research activities and paper and poster presentations.
