Academic Activities:
The department functions with a mission of empowering medical students with attitudes and skills to reach everyone, including the unreached, with health care that is managed efficiently.
Towards achieving this goal the department is involved in the training of following batches.

Disease Control
Natural history, Medical care, Prevention and Rehabilitation of diseases of Public health importance are given extra attention. Disease surveillance is explained with respect to standardized case definition, ensuring completeness of coverage and reliability of data, transmission and transformation of data. An overview of international health is also given.
Biostatistics
Since health information from the community is studied in large numbers, training in biostatistics, epidemiology and evaluation techniques is done as tutorial and practicals.
Behavioural change communication
is an essential component for ensuring health of the community. Students are given hands – on experience in communication skills by participating in health communication sessions in the community.
Health care system is elaborated with field visits arranged to the various health care institute primary health centres, health sub centre, urban health posts, communicable disease hospital etc.
Management skills :
This is the only department which offers training in management skills that is very essential for effective utilisation of resources.

AETCOM
Our Department is pleased to conduct the Attitude, Ethics, and Communication (AETCOM) session for all undergraduates including CRMI. This program, introduced by the Medical Council of India in 2019-20, integrates ethical values, patient responsiveness, and communication skills into the medical curriculum. Our aim is to equip medical students with the necessary competencies to deliver compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered care through various learning methods such as small group discussions, patient care scenarios, workshops, seminars, role plays, and lectures, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging educational experience.QUIZ EVENTS:

We have partnered with the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine to host a nationwide undergraduate quiz in celebration of World Health Day 2024. This event took place on April 2, 2024, and aimed to engage and educate students on important public health issues, fostering a deeper understanding and awareness of global health challenges and solutions

Ongoing Funded Projects:
ICMR Burn Injury community survey:
Our departmentin collaboration with Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery is conducting the“Burn Injury Community Survey” funded by the Indian council of Medical Research (ICMR). Co-investigators of this project are Dr. Rajesh J, Associate Professor and Dr. Kamali, Assistant Professor of this Department.This three years project is a Multi centric community-based project which aims to study the prevalence, KAP (Knowledge, Attitude, &Practice) for prevention & first aid of Burns, Quality of Life and out of pocket expenditure of burn injury and evaluation of IEC (Information, Education, Communication). A total of 3,400 households have been surveyedas a part of this project, which includes 1700 households in TP Chatram (urban area) and 1700 householdsin Nandhivaram (rural area). Field workers would collect data assisted by Project Technical officers and followed by IEC activities which will be followed by a Post intervention survey of IEC. Finally, the overall survey details will be consolidated and submit to the ICMR as the Project outcome.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme (CMBFS) evaluation survey
Our department actively participated in the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme evaluation multicentric survey funded by the Tamil Nadu Health System Project. We conducted periodic surveys in designated government primary schools to evaluate the programme effectivenessby nutritional status assessment and academic performance assessment of the school children.
Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam (MTM)evaluation survey
Under the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam Scheme, which aims in screening and treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Cancer cervix, breast cancer and oral cancer. Our efforts encompass hospital and home-based community screening and treatment for Diabetes and Hypertension, screening for breast, oral and cervical cancers, medication delivery, promoting awareness about NCDs and lifestyle changes, along with providing physiotherapy and palliative care servicesOutreach and community activities:
Family Adoption Program
Based on NMC Curriculum, the Department of Community Medicine conducts a Family Adoption Program, targeting village outreach for first, second, and third-year MBBS students. This initiative benefits both students and village residents. Additionally, we organize diagnostic medical camps in the village to further support the community
Medical Camps
We also organize free medical camps to provide timely healthcare access to community during emergency situations, including disease outbreaks, cyclones, and floods.
Field Visits for Undergraduate :
As part of our curriculum, we are organizing various field trips for undergraduate students. These include visits to a water treatment plant, a sewage treatment facility, a food laboratory, a cold chain facility, milk dairy etc.
