The department of Medical Gastroenterology conducts OPD , endoscopies and procedures in 3 centers which are affiliated to Government Kilpauk Medical College –
1. Government Peripheral HopitalAnnanagar( DDHD – Department of Digestive Health and diseases )
2. Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital
3. Government Royapettah Hospital
Department of Digestive Health and Diseases (Department of Medical Gastroenterology) has been functioning in Govt peripheral hospital, Annanagar, since 6th august 1986, vide G.O. MS. No. 1277. DM Higher Speciality course in Medical Gastroenterology was started in this hospital in the year 1999 with two seats This course is the first DM course in the medical history of KMC, Chennai. This course has had the recognition and clearance by the Ministry of Health, Government of India, and Medical council of India, Government of Tamil Nādu and the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai.
At present the annual PG intake is 6 seats per year The department has a male and female ward of 30 beds each ( Total 60 beds ) , with an ICU facility with 6 beds having ventilators and essential critical care equipments.
It caters to an average OPD census of 40000 patients per year , conducts, daily OPDs from Monday to Saturday, and an average IP census of 7000 per year . It caters to high end gastro care by acting as a tertiary referral centre to hospitals across Tamil Nadu and even neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh.
The department has an Endoscopy suite , library , Operation theatre, Labarotary , Auditorium ( capacity of 100 members with audio visual aid ) ,Clinical demonstration room, XRAY , Ultrasound and duty rooms for Residents . The department carries out around 6000 Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopies yearly and 1500 colonoscopies yearly and a wide variety of therapeutic endoscopic interventions.
The department also conducts monthly CME , with lectures of eminent speakers with active participation of medical gastroenterology residents from various colleges in Chennai . As part of teaching programmes , regular academics are being conducted as per as NMC norms – including clinical case discussions , topic presentations , journal clubs , guideline presentation.
In Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital , thrice weekly OPDs are run and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies are carried out . There are 2 wards ( male and female with a bed strength of 30 beds ) .
In Governement Royappettah Hospital twice weekly OPDs are run and therapeutic and diagnostic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies are carried out .
