Staff Particulars

The Department of Orthopedics at Kilpauk Medical College consists of the Orthopedic wings in 2 hospitals – the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH) and the Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH). Each of the two hospitals has two units, each unit being headed by a Professor. Each unit has a strength of 50 beds -20 for males, 10 -females, 10 -post op, 5 -emergency and 5 -pediatrics.

The Department of Orthopedics has two units, headed by Prof.S.S.Sukumaran.

Departmental Activities

Our Trauma Block houses state of the art operation theatres with the latest equipments, implants and instruments. We perform about 150 surgeries every month consisting of all major and minor fracture fixations with new techniques, Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, spinal surgeries and paediatric procedures on 6 days every week, in addition to 24 hour fracture treatment clinic to treat all major and minor fractures and dislocations.

The out-patient clinic starts every day at 7 30A.M to 12 00P.M and around 4500 cold orthopaedic cases and around 600 trauma cases are seen in a month, with admissions of around 150 patients monthly.

The Department of Orthopaedics at Government Royapettah Hospital is led by Prof.R.Balachandran. It has 4 Asst. Professors with a bed strength of around 100 and caters to more than 5000 patients a month. It has been named a “Centre of Excellence” by the committee consisting of Prof. M. Natarajan and Prof.T. Durairajan. It is the first government hospital in the state to have arthroscopy facility. It is a pride to mention that this is the first hospital in the state to start 24 hours fracture clinic in the entire city of Chennai.

We conducted the state level Orthopedic conference – the TNOA meet in 2006. We have conducted an International Conference on Acetabular fractures and Elbow injuries in 1998. We take active part in various state, national and international conferences and in all the MOS meetings with regular paper presentations and also conduct MOS meets in our department. We have a journal club wherein discussions on the latest publications are undertaken. Our professors and assistant professors have published studies in various national journals. We have an Arthroscopy and Sports Injury Clinic where diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of various joints are done through key hole method.

We have a separate Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation headed by Prof. Geetha Kalpana where more than 150 patients are given physiotherapy and taught different exercises to overcome disabilities.
