Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital is one of the premier hospitals located in the middle of a densely populated Chennai , especially catering to the poor /lower socioeconomic status people. The hospital is unique in providing tertiary health services not only for the state of Tamil Nadu , but also to the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh.
The Paediatric department of Government Kilpauk Medical College has an outpatient strength of 50000 per annum and an inpatient strength of about 3000 per annum.
Government Kilpauk Medical College has a well equipped Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as well as a Paediatric Intensive Medical Care Unit.
About 6000 babies are delivered in Government Kilpauk Medical college Hospital per annum. About 3500 babies are admitted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the department.
The NICU offers services like phototherapy, mechanical ventilation, CPAP, surfactant replacement therapy, parenteral nutrition, screening for ROP, screening for congenital anomalies and inborn errors of metabolism etc., There is a 24×7 neonatal emergency room to stabilise babies and triage them. There is a separate rooming in ward for the mothers to stay with their babies . A separate room exclusively for the preterm and low birth weight babies where supervised kangaroo mother care is given. Sick babies who are delivered in KMCH and also babies referred from corporation centers, primary health centers and other Government hospitals are managed here. Babies who are discharged from the NICU are followed up in the high risk newborn follow up OP. The growth and neuro developmental outcome is monitored .
The neonatal intensive care unit has all the latest equipments including 11 functioning ventilators , CPAP machines , pulse oximeters,multipara monitors,phototherapy units, radiant warmers, infusion pumps and syringe pumps. A computerized radiography reader is available to interpret the X rays taken without any delay. A central monitoring system is also present , CCTV is also available which has been installed to prevent theft of babies
A 10 bedded PICU with 11 functioning ventilators and all other essential equipment like pulse Oximeters, Multipara monitors, Portable ultrasound machine, ECHO Machine , BiPAP , HFNC, Infusion and syringe pumps etc., which are necessary in the care of sick children. Children from burns ward are also transferred to PICU for intensive management.
A 4 bedded step down unit is available for continuation of monitoring and intervention for patients stabilized in the paediatric ICU
A well equipped paediatric ward with 80 beds is available in KMCH.
Op is being conducted on all days .speciality clinics are conducting regularly. Monday –Neurology clinic, Tuesday-Nephrology and Pulmonology clinic, Wednesday- Haematology, Thursday – Cardiology, Friday-Gastroenterology clinic, Saturday-Endocrinology clinic. Immunization is being carried out in all days . On an average around 50 to 60 babies are immunised per day ILR and and Deep freezer are available in opd. IEC activities are done in OPD.
Paediatric emergency room is available in the TAEI ward . Sick cases are triaged and stabilized before transferring them to the PICU. It is equipped with central oxygen supply , pulse oximeter. Nebulizer , resuscitation equipment etc
District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) at Govt. Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital , in Coordination with RBSK ( Rashtriya Bal Sasthya Karyakram ) provides Child Health Screening and Early Intervention Services for Children( 0- 18 Yrs) for Defects at Birth, Deficiencies, Diseases & Developmental Delays including Disabilities. DEIC Team consists of Pediatrician, Medical officer, Pedodontist, Audiologist, Physiotherapist, Special Educator, Psychologist, Optometrist, Dental Technician, Lab Technician, DEO and Data manager.
1. | World Breast Feeding day was celebrated by the Department of Pediatrics, KMC between 1st August ’09 to 7th August ’09. Various programs highlighting the importance of breast milk to all babies up to 6 months of age was conducted during the week long celebration. Health education was imparted to all Antenatal mothers. A quiz on breast feeding for both the Undergraduates and Postgraduates conducted and prizes were distributed. Healthy baby contest was also conducted to encourage mothers who had exclusively breast fed the baby. |
2. | Nutrition Week was celebrated by the Department of Pediatrics, KMC during the first week of September(sep 1st to 7th). The importance of nutrition for good physical and mental growth in growing children stressed through various programs. A food exhibition displaying the various healthy food items and their mode of preparation was held with an enthusiastic participation from the ICDS health workers. Nutrition related quiz was conducted to the undergraduates and prizes were distributed. |
3. | World New Born Week was held between 15th to 21st November ’09. Various academic activities like Neonatal Resuscitation workshop , New Born quiz, CME, Symposium were conducted during the week long celebrations. |
4. | World Pneumonia Day was celebrated at the KMC premises by the IAP, TN chapter on 2nd November. A workshop and exhibition was held and the various preventive aspects of pneumonia were highlighted. |
5. | The City Pediatric Meet was conducted in the month of July at KMC . Pediatricians and Neonatologists from all over the city participated in the meet enthusiastically. |
6. | World teenage day was celebrated at KMC to promote adolescent health and nutrition. Various posters displayed the hazards of smoking alcoholism, drug addiction and other adolescent health problems in the teenage group .A debate on “vidalai paruvathil uruthunaiaga iruppathu petrorgala , nanbargala” was held. |
7. | Journal club involving the post graduates are being conducted on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. |
8. | City Pediatric meet is conducted at KMCH once every year with active participation of Pediatricians /Neonatologist from Govt institutions & Private hospitals in and around Chennai. |
9. | CME’s are held once in three months .Interesting cases are presented and discussed. |
10. | On an average 6-8 symposiums/seminars are conducted every year for benefit of UG’s, CRRI & PG’s. |

12. | School health camps are conducted every Thursdays under NRHM scheme with assistance from OBG & SPM departments |

14. | Faculty based Newborn care training was impended to staff nurses /birth attendants from the peripheral hospitals /taluk level hospital for 45 days. |

Government Royapettah hospital is one of the premier institution in Chennai started in 1911 to cater to the needs of south Chennai population.
The Department of Paediatrics was established about 55 years back with a bed strength of 30. Eventually over years it was increased to 54 bed. It is well supported by round the clock laboratory and radiology facilities. We have inhouse various super speciality departments for expert opinion. The New Paediatric block has ground plus 2 floors. The ground floor has the outpatients department with following facilities.
The second floor has the 35 bedded general paediatric ward, 2 bedded isolation ward and a procedure room
