Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairment or disabilities affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons.
This is a broad speciality known as “PHYSIATRY” and a specialist having completed training in this field is known as “PHYSIATRIST”. M.D in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, is a MCI recognised course after the MBBS course.
Physiatrist are experts in designing comprehensive patient catered rehabilitation plans and are integral members of the team.

Rehabilitation team includes Physiatrist, Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Rehabilitation Nurse, Social worker, Clinical Psychologist.
Though the speciality is existent for more than a quarter century in India, PMR department in Kilpauk Medical College started functioning as independent department from August 2006 and was officially sanctioned on 18.04.2012 vide GO NO. 140, H & FW (E1). Postgraduate MD course was started from 2019 and Bachelor of Occupational therapy course from October 2018. Each year we have 2 M.D PMR Postgraduates and 10 students for Occupational therapy course.

During the weekly Medical Boards ,eligible patients who require DISABILITY CERTIFICATES are evaluated and certificates are issued accordingly by team of doctors .
As per MCI guidelines undergraduates are posted in PMR department during their CRMI
TRAINING
Academic training for MD PMR postgraduate students and Occupational therapy students as per NMC
and University norms are given.
BPT Internees from private physiotherapy colleges get posted to our department for training in various clinical departments. Periodic subject seminars are conducted as part of training program and internees are trained to present on their chosen topics for 15-20 minutes followed by interactive session with active participation of interns.
